Carol Patrie

Carol has always loved teaching. As a child she watched her father, Stanley Patrie, teaching at the Rochester School for the Deaf. She remembers the excitement of seeing him convey science concepts to his students. While she was growing up, Carol interpreted for her parents and their friends. Carol began her professional interpreting career in 1968 when she became one of the first interpreters at the National Technical Institute for the Deaf. It was an exciting start to a fascinating career. Carol holds a CSC, CI and CT from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID). After moving to the Washington, DC area, she completed a Master's Degree at Catholic University and began freelance interpreting in a wide variety of settings, specializing in legal and medical interpreting. She completed her PhD in Adult Cognition at the University of Maryland.

In 1984 Carol accepted a faculty position at Gallaudet University where she became Professor and Director of the MA in Interpretation program and received the Outstanding Graduate Faculty Award. While at Gallaudet, she was Project Director for a federal interpreter training grant for the Mid-Atlantic Region. She is a past president of the Conference of Interpreter Trainers and is a recipient of the Mary Stotler Award. Carol was one of the founding Commissioners on the Commission on Collegiate Interpreter Education. She serves on the Board of Editors of RID's Journal of Interpretation and International Journal of Interpreter Education, published by CIT.

After retiring from Gallaudet, Carol began writing The Effective Interpreting Series, the realization of a life-long dream. The tenth and final volume in the series, Simultaneous Interpreting from ASL was released in 2018. She is also the author of Interpreting in Professional Settings, which includes volumes for medical, insurance and legal settings. Fingerspelled Word Recognition through Rapid Serial Visual Presentation (RSVP) is a groundbreaking approach to successfully comprehending fingerspelled words in context. Carol is an approved sponsor for the RID Certification Maintenance program. Contact her to find out more about using any of her works to earn CEUs in the comfort of your own home. Carol travels extensively providing training to interpreters and interpreter educators. Contact Carol for information about bringing training on her materials to your area. When she is not writing, traveling, or teaching, Carol enjoys her grandchildren, working in her extensive gardens, and developing new designs in kiln-formed glass in her home studio.
